Dr. Jonathan J. Baskin
For nearly 25 years, Dr. Jonathan J. Baskin has transformed the lives of spine patients across New Jersey with precision, experience, and a deeply personal commitment to each patient’s outcome.
Introduction
Chronic back pain, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and spinal tumors are conditions that can rob people of their quality of life. Dr. Jonathan J. Baskin, a fellowship-trained spine specialist at Atlantic Brain and Spine, has spent nearly 25 years developing the expertise and skill to help patients reclaim their lives through the least invasive approach possible.
Trained at two of the most prestigious neurosurgical programs in the country — Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Barrow Neurological Institute — Dr. Baskin brings world-class training to every patient encounter in New Jersey. Visit his full profile here.
Fellowship Training with World-Renowned Surgeons
Dr. Baskin completed his residency at the Barrow Neurological Institute, studying under the legendary neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Spetzler. He then completed a Clinical Spine Surgery Fellowship at Barrow under spine care pioneer Dr. Volker Sonntag — an experience that shaped his philosophy of rigorous, evidence-based, personalized spinal care.

Disc Replacement: An Alternative to Fusion
Dr. Baskin is a recognized advocate for motion-preserving spine surgery, including artificial disc replacement — an increasingly popular alternative to traditional spinal fusion. Unlike fusion, which eliminates motion at the treated level, disc replacement allows patients to maintain natural spinal mobility and may reduce the risk of adjacent segment degeneration. His published research has helped advance the field, and he brings this expertise directly to his patients in New Jersey.
Research, Publications and Memberships
Dr. Baskin has authored 27 peer-reviewed publications on topics including spinal reconstructive surgery, neuroendoscopy, hydrocephalus, and vascular neurosurgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), and the North American Spine Society (NASS).
